Each domino is a rectangular tile with a line dividing its face into two square <i>ends<\/i>. Each end is marked with a number of spots (also called <i><a title=\"Pip (counting)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pip_(counting)\">pips<\/a><\/i>, <i>nips<\/i>, or <i>dobs<\/i>) or is blank. The backs of the dominoes in a set are indistinguishable, either blank or having some common design. The domino gaming pieces (colloquially nicknamed <i>bones<\/i>, <i>cards<\/i>, <i>tiles<\/i>, <i>tickets<\/i>, <i>stones<\/i>, <i>chips<\/i>, or <i>spinners<\/i>) make up a domino set, sometimes called a <i>deck<\/i> or <i>pack<\/i>. The traditional Sino-European domino set consists of 28 dominoes, featuring all combinations of spot counts between zero and six. A domino set is a generic gaming device, similar to <a title=\"Playing card\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Playing_card\">playing cards<\/a> or <a title=\"Dice\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dice\">dice<\/a>, in that a variety of games can be played with a set.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest mention of dominoes is from <a title=\"Song dynasty\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Song_dynasty\">Song dynasty<\/a> China found in the text <i>Former Events in Wulin<\/i> by Zhou Mi (1232\u20131298).<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333330154419px; line-height: 20px;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Modern dominoes first appeared in Italy during the 18th century, but how <a title=\"Chinese dominoes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chinese_dominoes\">Chinese dominoes<\/a> developed into the modern game is unknown. Italian missionaries in China may have brought the game to Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The name &#8220;domino&#8221; is most likely from the resemblance to a kind of <a title=\"Domino mask\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Domino_mask\">carnival costume<\/a> worn during the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Venetian Carnival\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venetian_Carnival\">Venetian Carnival<\/a>, often consisting of a black-hooded robe and a white mask.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominoes#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dominoes#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> Contrary to the coinage of the word <a title=\"Polyomino\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polyomino\">polyomino<\/a> as a generalization, there is no connection between the word &#8220;domino&#8221; and the number 2 in any language.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dominoes is a family of games played with rectangular &#8220;domino&#8221; tiles.
